If I go to the front page of the website, and don't come to the forums, it automatically makes any posts that occurred since I was here last read, similar to if I just enter the forums and close the browser right away. This is kind of annoying to me...I'd like to be able to see if I have private messages without having to enter the forum to see what's new.
Actually, I'd love it in general if unread posts were only marked as read if I actually read them, not just when my browser closes. A few times I have just started reading the board in the morning and for whatever reason the forum resets and I have to re-log in...and all of the posts are "read" and I have to inspect the date/time to see what's new. We have the "mark all posts as read" button for a reason. I prefer forums which only remove the unread tag if you actually read the post or clear it yourself, to be honest. (Although I like this forum's method better than ones which only make posts read if you force them to, and not by actually reading them.)

Yeah I understand your frustration and it's on my list of things I'm trying to solve. If you or someone else knows of a solution to this for phpbb that I have missed, let me know.
Basically, the current way it track is that anythign since the last time you were on the board is flagged as unread. Soon as you close and reopen, it considers you back at a different time, even if it's just seconds later and assume you read everythign you wanted to the previous time.
Until I find a solution, my only choice really is to temp take out the integration of the hp & forums for now or to let it continue this way...
