Title: Why do
Post by: Bulge on May 13, 2004, 12:03:18 PM
people keep answering to Rippertiger's posts as if he were  NOT an extremely annoying spammer????

No less then 11 threads on the front page are off his hand, practically all of them with trivial questions or just spammy one-sentence remarks.

I find it annoying as hell.

Post by: Tastian on May 13, 2004, 12:11:10 PM
Hehe I joked with a couple people in PM's that he single handedly doubled the amount of polls on the board in two days.  Most of it is silly and poorly worded hard to understand stuff that doesn't really seem to get at anything, but I don't read the boards just to answer people I like or who speak a certain way or whatever else.  Hopefully he'll read some old threads and change his style a bit, but *shrugs*.
Title: Kids
Post by: mac173 on May 13, 2004, 12:22:31 PM
From reading his posts, he is in the 10th grade, and the ppl in his school don't play EQ. His style annoys me as well, but is exactly what I see on IM's and board messages my HS age daughter sends. It is just an age thing.
I'm actually glad to see someone under the age of 30 playing and taking part in the community. I could use some punctuation to make the posts easier to read, but it isn't the worst thing I have to deal with by a long shot.
I'm sure that if it gets out of hand, the mods will take care of it.

Shouldn't kids in the 10th grade be able to use punctuation occasionally?
Title: Why do
Post by: Hanlaana on May 13, 2004, 12:48:51 PM
I think he's funny. He's so enthusiastic, he makes me smile. But that could just be my warped sense of humor.
Title: Yes
Post by: mac173 on May 13, 2004, 12:52:55 PM
Yes they should, but Instant Message has gotten ppl used to not  bothering with grammer, spelling, punctuation, etc.
My FATHER (72 years old) has asked me why I punctuate and such in e-mail.
It's out of hand, but virtually uncontrollable.

I guess it's true to an extent... I've got a 13 year old brother (I'm 30 - my poor dad) who doesn't use punctuation in his internet dealings either and I jump all over him alot, but I was really hoping it was just my brother and not a widespread problem.
Title: Why do
Post by: Tastian on May 13, 2004, 01:38:24 PM
It's an extremely wide spread problem that most don't even realize.  I try very hard to tailor my typing style to what I'm doing and keep to "well this is what I'd sound like if I were saying it" technique.  Doesn't always work out the best, but seems to get the message across.  I get e-mails from some people that are literally 100+ lines down with no commas, periods, paragraphs, etc.

Meh, I'd love an ignore button.
Title: Why do
Post by: JillieMT on May 13, 2004, 04:26:17 PM
I have NO idea what the big deal is. You can always see who originated a thread. See his name there? DON'T READ IT!

No ignore button? That is just LAZY! Take it upon yourself to ignore anyone you wish. If you see the name, DON'T READ IT!

Sheesh!

:D

I understand it's hard to suppress motherly feelings, JillieMT.

And I can't ignore the fact that I see this:

Rippertiger
Rippertiger
Rippertiger
Someone else
Rippertiger
Rippertiger
Someone else
Someon else
Rippertiger
Rippertiger
Rippertiger
Rippertiger

when I open the Index of one of  my favourite forums. If you can not understand that some people find this annoying then I'm sorry.

Post by: Lorathir on May 13, 2004, 05:41:47 PM
I find his enthusiasm for the game, as someone has already pointed out, shines through his posts. Yeah, he tends to spam a little, but he's new here. Pretty soon he'll settle down to regular 'forum life.'

He's shown he's not above poking fun at himself, and when he's had it poked at him, he rolls with the joke and joins in. I find his happy go lucky attitude refreshing. He mentioned in another post he wasn't liked by the other kids in his school. I think a little leniancy for him here would not be too much to ask.

Rippertiger has been banned.
IP's banned also.

All posts deleted.

Post by: Coprolith on May 13, 2004, 06:21:26 PM
May i ask why was he was banned? Did he ignore warnings? It would be a little cruel to ban him right away just for posting questions, silly as they were. I didn't really mind his youthful enthusiasm (not that that kept me from taking potshots at his punctuation)

/Hard Ass Hat *ON*

I dont take kindly to spamming my board by 85 year olds or 10 year olds.

He can go to the other board and amuse them.

/Hard Ass Hat *OFF*

PS: I fight internet abuse as part of my job in real life if that sheds any light on my feelings on spamming :)

The kid annoyed the hell out of me, but I am really surprised he got banned.  Honestly, I would have expected for him to have gotten a warning first before this drastic measure was taken.

Game on,

But did you warn him before banning him? Because i don't take kindly to people who'd stomp on a little kid just for being over-enthusiastic about a game.

I take that as a 'no', you didn't warn him.

Just because you 'reserve' the right to ban someone without warning doesn't make it right to hurt a little kid's feelings. Warning him to tone it down was the least you could've done. There was no malicious content in his posts, they were merely irritating to some people (and a minority at that judging by the posts in this thread). I know the Internet can draw the blood from under your fingernails with it many spammers but i think this was too harsh. A little moderation in moderation is a good thing.

I kinda liked the rippertiger...

His posts were funny, if not a bit overzealous.  Some were definitely annoying, but if he is a kid, a bit of leeway was in order.

Also, he gave me something new to look and and think about every 30 mins or so at work.

Have to say i kinda like Ripper myself.  Was fun to look at some of his posts.  I figured he'd be told to hold it down a little (was getting a little excessive), but banning does seem a bit harsh.

I know this is a pretty stable board with almost all at 65, but there seems to be a few new Bst's working there way up.  I happen to be one of them.  I enjoy seeing someone post new stuff that isn't about the end game.

/shrug dunno, it is your board, so your decision to make.  I think if you talk with him and maybe explain things a little, he'll hopefully slow posting down.
Title: Why do
Post by: Urim on May 13, 2004, 09:40:10 PM
I found his posts annoying as hell. Almost no point to 95% of them, just rambling that really made no sense and was just a pain to look at considering the lack of punctuation. Plus also seeing his name generating 10 of the top 13 posts with the babble or useless polls didn't add much to the board.

VERY classy for you to reconsider Kash. We should just take Ripper under our wing and mentor him in all things Beastlord and Netiquette! :)

Aye, good show Kash.
Don't get me wrong, if there's a reason to suspect he's not what he pretends to be and is in fact deliberately spamming I'd be among the first to put a ban on him myself if i could. The Internet has dented even my naive idealism in that respect. But from where i'm sitting i have no reason to assume that he's anything but a kid who's happy to have a found a place where he can talk about his favourite game. He just needs to have explained to him that a messageboard is not a chatroom.

I also agree with reconsidering the banning. Like JillyMT said, lets take him under our wing, and shoe him the way.

Bring him back to us, Kash. We'll show him the way.

Post by: mac173 on May 16, 2004, 02:37:33 PM
Thats wonderful, but it's no suprise Rippertiger has disappeared from the board. He has been posting for about 2 weeks, in multiple forums, with apprpriate posts. He has a bad day, puts up a bunch of "junk" poats in OOC, and get driven from the board.

Way to drive the member count up, guys.

If you want to kill this board, keep it up.

I kept my thoughts to myself for the most part till now, but I've decided I don't care if you ban me Kash. You are too heavy handed. You quote rules you JUST edited. Check it out. The Rules were edited 3 MINUTED before the  Post from Kash quoting the reserve the righ to ban rule, which I do not remember. And there is no explanation of the DELETION of posts which is expresly stated would never happen.

If the site owner will not follow the rules HE WROTE, where is this site going?

I agree with unbanning him, although it seems it made no difference.

Remember when you started? Remember when you reached X level and had 200 questions to ask about this and that.

Remember, everyone here at one point or another had questions about this game some more than others, and some have friends IRL etc to help them. I just think we should lighten up on him. Banning indeed was a bit harsh,  but I'm not the admin to decide :)

Key things to remember here is this:

1:-I am the Master of my own Universe and All Powerful Lord of my Domain.
2:-I do not need to be politically correct.
3:-I do not need to please anyone but myself.
4:-I own these boards and they are "FREE" to you.
5:-My boards are ad free and will stay that way.
6:-I ask almost nothing from you except be somewhat polite.
7:-You do not 'have' to be here. You can go. I do not care.
8:-I can make my own rules up when I please. (Note #1)

Perhaps some folks are taking for granted that which *I* supply to *you* for *free*. Dont lose site of this.

Problems and Questions? Please refer to #1.

Other then that... have a good day :)

PS: How can one find fault with that which you have no control over, have supplied to you for free and are a valueable board member? I dont ban people out of spite. I will ban you if I feel you are breaking the integrity of my board. Which in this case "SPAM" qualifies.

PSS: Can anyone name how many people have been Banned or Suspended from here since Jan 01, 2004? Thats right... 2. TWO and 1 of the 2 was unbanned.

Care to argue anyone? If so, please refer to #1 :)

I'm afraid I have to back your play Kash...
...as you have given me no other choice!  lol

Just kidding man, I agree.  Your boards, do with as you please.

No one has to come here, no one pays a fee, etc, etc...

I found Rippertigers posts to be very annoying as well.  He is guilty of a cardinal sin on MB use: Use an appropriate subject line to describe your post.  Because if you do not, you are wasting many people's time and pissing them off in the process.  And sure, everyone is guilty of this now and then, but almost all of his posts have non-descriptive subject lines.

Please work on that Ripper, if you're going to continue to post.  Seriously, it's a big time saver for people whom are looking for posts on a given subject (for instance browsing through to see if there are any posts on the new GoD re-tune).

Considering this is the rants forum, are you really going to be browsing through here looking for information?  Hence the subject line in a Rants Forum could be pretty much anything versus say in a Equipment Forum where the subject line is "Good Idea" or "I was gonna do this".

Locked as really nothing constructive can come from it other then folks agreeing or disagreeing.

Keep in mind this simple concept: If you seriously 'mess up' you will get banned. If you play nice you wont. Its pretty simply. I have had 2 instances since Jan 01, 2004 where I felt the need to ban someone.

This was 1 of them 2 times. After discussing this with Ripper I found his posts to be innocent and I have unbanned him.

Perhaps he should get a title... bua ha ha.
